Ohio Fireworks Users Association

SHOOT YOUR OWN FIREWORKS SHOW BY REMOTE CONTROL

 DISPLAY SHOWS

Fireworks exhibits

As an OFUA member you may attend a permitted Fireworks show where you can have your own display.  Displays are scheduled around Holidays and other days (subject to change). You can reserve products on this website to pick up by appointment with Ohio I.D. in advance of the show. All of your items will be set up next to each other in such a way that they will not fall over. All of the individual fuses will be tied onto one long fuse. The fuse will be lit by an electric igniter that you can fire by remote control outside of the danger zone. The remote firing equipment and electric igniters will be provided. The danger zone is 70 feet per inch in diameter of the largest shell. If the largest shell is 2” then no unlicensed person is allowed within 140 feet of the fireworks when they are being fired. If you get items like bottle rockets or reloadable mortar shells you will need to provide enough of your own equipment to safely fire all items in one setup without reentering the field. We will have some equipment available like boards, tape, stakes, and igniter wire, but you might want to bring your own in case we run out. You should also bring: sun block, water, food, lawn chair, gloves, flash light or headlamp, camera, driver’s license, etc. We’ll have a brief training session at 3pm to show you how to safely set up a display and use a water extinguisher. We are located at 1145 Newmans-Cardington Rd. W., Marion, OH 43302. Only items you purchase through this website are allowed. You will need to sign the independent contractor agreement in order to pick up your items. This allows you to transport them to the licensed exhibitor in the setup area. You can pick up your items in the driveway beside the barn. You can then leave the driveway and reenter the property at the setup time where the setup area will be marked. Attendance will not be taken since you are not required to be registered. No smoking within 50 feet of any fireworks. No hand-firing of fireworks by unlicensed individuals will be tolerated. Must be 18. Fireworks can be dangerous, use at your own risk.

Safety Policies and Procedures

Ohio Fireworks Users Association Effective April 1st, 2020

 Introduction
These rules are general guidelines. They may be modified or amended at any time by the Executive Committee. All interpretations of these guidelines are at the discretion of the Safety Officer and the OFUA Executive officers. If you have any questions or doubts regarding fireworks activities, safety rules, etc., PLEASE ASK before making a mistake. Within fourteen (14) days prior to an OFUA sanctioned shoot, the Safety Officer may impose additional rules and regulations based upon the shoot site and the projected weather.
Every association member has a responsibility for enforcing these safety rules. If you see any safety violations either correct them or bring them to the attention of the Safety Officer and/or Lead Shooter.  These guidelines represent a minimum standard and include only the absolutely essential rules. Members are referred to the most recent versions of NFPA-160; NFPA-1123; NFPA-1124; NFPA-1126; PGI Safety Guidelines 2011; as well as the Ohio Redbook for additional information. These documents and the combined experience of the officers and safety team will serve in guiding specific decisions made regarding shooting issues. Where conflicts exist, these referenced guidelines shall apply.

Safety Policies and Procedures
1) All OFUA activities shall comply with all federal, state and local laws and ordinances. OFUA strongly recognizes and abides by Ohio Laws, specifically ORC 3743 and OAC 1301:7-7.
2) ANSI approved eye protection is mandatory when inside any active shooting or display
area. Ear protection and cotton clothing are strongly advised. Any shooter hand lighting
any device, specifically shells, will be required to wear ANSI/DOT approved head
protection (i.e.: hard-hat/motorcycle helmet). Long pants and long sleeves are also
required. No nylon jackets, windbreakers, and any other non-cotton materials may be
worn in any shooting area. Clothing MUST be flame resistant clothing such as cotton or
racing suit SFI material. Protective clothing/equipment is subject to approval by the Safety Officer and/or Lead Exhibitor.
3) No smoking within fifty feet (50') of fireworks, E-Match, Quick Match, fuse or anywhere
within taped off firing areas. It is a personal responsibility of the individual to make certain the cigarette, cigar, etc. is fully extinguished before leaving it unattended.
4) Any member or guest who has consumed any amount of alcohol or illegal drugs shall not be permitted to handle fireworks or be permitted within the designated discharge area. This includes not only the setup and shooting period, but also post-shoot rack/tube/cake inspection and evacuation. The Safety Officer and/or Lead Exhibitor will have the final say and determination if someone appears to be under the influence.
5) Guests must be accompanied by a member at all times while within the shoot site.
6) Only guests who have a valid Ohio Lead Exhibitor and/or Exhibitor Assistant/Shooter
license on file with the group shall be permitted to handle non-consumer 1.4 items
7) All activities that include any altering or assembly of fireworks must be performed in an approved and designated area by the Safety Officer and/or Lead Exhibitor. Manufacturing anywhere else is absolutely prohibited. Altering and assembly is event specific and is not available or allowed at all events.
8) Firecrackers must be discharged only in approved areas and by approved means. Hand holding and tossing these devices is expressly and absolutely prohibited. There are no exceptions to this rule. Hand holding is only allowed if device is specifically designed to be held. No tossing of any firework device is permitted.
9) At all shooting areas, where reloading would be done, materials shall be stored prior to
shooting, in approved ready boxes.
10) Single 1.4 cakes may only be discharged from within approved shoot boxes, buried, or braced to prevent accidental tip-over. Final determination as to which cakes need to be braced in this manner shall be made by the Safety Officer and/or Lead Exhibitor.
11) Any member or guest promoting any illegal or unsafe act may be directed to leave the shoot site. Membership and/or guest privileges may be suspended or revoked by the
Executive Committee.
12) E-firing activities will be done with an inspected and approved initiation device which
complies with NFPA 1123. Continuity testing will only be done with notification and
the permission of the Safety Officer and/or Lead Exhibitor. The shooting field will be
cleared prior to testing, at the discretion of the Safety Officer and/or Lead Exhibitor.
13) Chain fusing, whether for racks or on boards, will be done with the safety of the
membership and spectators in mind. The exact method of chain fusing is at the discretion of the individual member, with approval of the Safety Officer and/or Lead Exhibitor.
14) Separation Distances: The table of distances within NFPA 1123 will be adhered to with
the interpretation of the Safety Officer and/or the Lead Exhibitor. The use of rockets of
6oz. and under will be at 2” shell separation distances. Rockets over 6 oz. will be fired
with 3” shell distances. Rockets and missiles may be banned, on a case by case basis, by
the Safety Officer and/or Lead Exhibitor.
Distances for Outdoor Fireworks Display Sites: Minimum Separation Distances from
Mortars to Spectators for Land or Water Displays
15) A minimum of three operable, fully charged (pressurized) water fire extinguishers (FE) will be on the shoot site while the display commences. One will be positioned at the
designated location where the lead exhibitor is stationed. The minimum of the remaining two FE will be placed within the display area with concurrence of the Safety Officer and/or Lead Exhibitor. Each of the FE will be illuminated by a device on or attached to the FE to define its location in the display area visible to the Safety Officer, Lead Exhibitor, and Shooters associated with the display. Additional FE in the display area are optional, however, they must be illuminated.
16) At the completion of a display, a minimum of a 15-minute cool-down period is invoked before any checking of product, rack inspection, evacuation/clearing of the discharge site, and removal of electronic firing devices. This time may be extended at the sole discretion of the Safety Officer and/or Lead Exhibitor.
17) Only Lead Exhibitors, Exhibitor Assistants and/or shooters that have been trained to
"clear racks" may do so. All others not trained will be accompanied by a trained individual to learn the technique until such time they are qualified to "clear racks”.
18) During rack inspection, every rack must be inspected (i.e. “double checked”) a second
time by a separate designated Lead Exhibitor, Exhibitor Assistants and/or shooter. This
practice will ensure the safety and integrity of club members and equipment.
19) Two-way radios or similar communication devices are expected to be used during any hand-fired shows to ensure the Safety Officer has direct communication with the Lead Shooter during a display.
20) When loading mortars with shells, a wooden stake is to be used to gently “tap” the shell to ensure it is sitting at the bottom of the mortar. No one is to use any other device (including metal rebar) to “tap” the shell.
21) Inserting the head of an e-match, without being shielded by the shroud, into quickmatch, the act known as “friction-matching” is prohibited.
